Several months ago my 6 year old D-link ADSL router gave up the ghost. It had worked faultlessly all that time. I replaced it with a shiny new Netgear wireless N router which has been nothing but trouble. Firstly it wouldn’t connect to the Airport express routers I use to stream music around the house and garden. I needed to set each one up with a static ip address on the router ??!!?! Then I found that the range was worse than the 6 year old wireless B unit and it frequently needed rebooting (well more than the “never” needed for the old D-Link). But the biggest issue was it’s failure to connect to the office VPN via my Mac. No matter what I tried and I tried everything, I couldn’t get it to open web pages on the intranet (of course old faithful D-Link had worked fine).

Today I finally lost the plot on this and recklessly spent £80 on a new router. I put my faith in old faithful and bought another D-Link (DSL-2740B) hoping the firewall and other settings would restore my wireless harmony. 15 minutes after opening the box I’m connected to the internet, my airports are streaming music, my iphone and itouch have no idea the router has changed and most important of all my Mac is surfing the intranet )))))))

Normal service is effortlessly resumed, thank you D-Link.

Firstly I try to install Firefox so my wife is not surfing with IE7 given the current vulnerability. Firefox won’t install, at least it won’t run. No errors or obvious issues it just doesn’t do anything when you try and start it ? Now Norton AntiVirus is telling me something broke during the last liveupdate and now my PC is not protected. I’m being asked to uninstall and reinstall Norton AV 2009. I’m temped to just by my wife an iMac instead !

Sports Personality of the Year

Good result in the BBC Sports personality of the year awards yesterday. Given GB’s success at the Olympics I think it was fitting that a triple gold medalist won. I was also in a way pleased Hamilton didn’t. British F1 drivers always do well but I often think that’s more to do with the greater number of F1 fans than the driver being a greater personality. I also think Lewis needs to become more of a personality and less of a superstar.

F1 wake-up call?

So Honda have pulled the plug on F1 stating the economic crisis as the reason. I don’t buy that, the economic situation is a useful excuse to exit without drawing attention to the fact they have spent a fortune in F1 and only won one race. I’m sure Honda is feeling the pinch right now but the money they spend on F1 is chump change compared to the other investment areas. I’m dissapointed by their exit, Honda is the only Japanese manufacturer with any passion or soul and I really thought they would become one of the top teams. I hope someone buys them, they have a lot of potential for 2009.

So who’s next. Well I think one of two things will happen. Either Honda’s exit will be used as an excuse for several others to depart or I’m right about it being a cover-up and everyone else will carry on as before. If the former happens then I’d bet money (if I was a betting man) on Torro Rosso and BMW. Torro Rosso and Red Bull are both bankrolled by Red Bull. Why have two teams in this climate. TR have not announced drivers for 2009 and it’s well know the team is up for sale. Why not cut and run now?

BMW? Why not? They make luxury cars and F1 bears no resemblance to road cars these days. BMW sales globally are taking dive, especially in the US where fuel prices are driving people to smaller engines. I don’t think F1 really fits with BMW’s image and this a great opportunity for them to walk. Lets see.

I’ve been a hardcore F1 fan since the late 80′s and yesterday’s title deciding race at Interlagos, Brazil can’t pass without comment. I say this not because Lewis Hamiliton won, it was simply the most exciting, nerve biting race I can remember since Nigel Mansell got me up in the wee hours to watch his title destroyed by a blown tyre (Adelaide 86). That’s a long time to wait for something more thrilling. I have to admit I was relaxed about who one the title yesterday. Lewis is British and a sublime talent so of course I would be happy for him to win, but this year his driving ethics have not impressed me, too many unnecessary harsh moves (Monza especially). The greats don’t need to do that. I’ve been very impressed with Felipe this year, apart from Silverstone he’s put the mistake prone persona away and delivered some great results. Without the events in Hungry and Singapore which were beyond his control he would have taken the title. I also think this was his last chance, next year Kimi will be back on his game and I think he’ll emerge as the faster driver in the new (regulation) era. I like Felipe but for some reason he’s not got that superstar image and that’s what the top teams want. I think that’s an unfair reflection on his abilities but an unfortunate truth. The number of cars capable of winning the title is very small and I feel Felipe will struggle to be top of the shopping list should a seat become available. I also feel hugely for his family and friends who yesterday for a few moments thought he’d won the title, that must be heart wrenching. I appreciated Lewis’ father’s reference to Felipe and his family shortly after the race and Luca Di Montezemolo’s comments about Hamilton today. With all the political rubbish of the last year it’s easy to forget this is a sport that makes huge demands on the participants (everyone, not just the drivers).

So congratulations to Lewis, & commiserations to Felipe, let’s hope next year’s title is as nail biting.

My iPhone is now perfect

Today I got around to upgrading my 2G iPhone to the latest 2.0 software version. In my last post I claimed that for someone like me who already has the 2G iPhone the 3G version is not worth the upgrade cost. With the latest OS software on my 2G I’m even more convinced. Nothing radical with the new OS, just some sensible little upgrades here and there. Maybe some of these should have been on the original (like the search function in contacts) but they are here now so let’s move on.

No iPhone 3G for me

Having eagerly waited for the 3G release and then the software to allow me to run it on my Vodaphone SIM I’ve now decided not to bother. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great phone, it’s just not worth the cost of the upgrade from the 2G one. Yes GPRS data is slow but it works when you need it and around the house and office it runs in WiFi which is way faster than 3G. The GPS would be nice for geotagging photos but the camera is not any better and I’ve seen many posts suggesting the GPS feature is not very accurate. Battery life is also supposed to be worse (not great on the 2G) and I don’t like the cheap plastic back (not very apple). So I’ll wait until my 2G packs up and then look to upgrade. You never know, by then they may have fixed the battery life, GPS and added a decent camera.
